Supa Grass, Synthetic Tennis Courts

Supa Grass synthetic surfaces for Tennis Courts

One of your first decisions when choosing the right tennis court for you is which surface will work best for your family or club. Below we have outlined several of the surface advantages of both the synthetic grass surface and also the acrylic or hard court surface. We also provide maintenance for all your tennis court services.

Surface Advantages

Synthetic Grass

  • Surface Life expectancy up to 15 years.

  • Feels and looks like natural grass.

  • Available in ‘Rust’ to look like clay.

  • Requires minimal maintenance.

  • Reduced body stress and strain.

  • Allows ‘slide’ to the ball.

  • Little abrasion on shoes and balls.

  • Cooler to play on.

  • Covers minor base imperfections.

By far the most popular surface today due to its comfort and relatively low maintenance there are many options available in base construction, surface type and colours. All of these generally depend on personal preference and budget. The grass is sand filled to give the carpet body and bounce.

Acrylic Surface (‘Hard’ Court)

  • Surface Life expectancy 5-7 years depending on usage

  • Textured surface – sure footing

  • Requires limited maintenance

  • Variable colour range

  • Very even, true bounce

  • Fast drying after rain

Base Options

Stabilised Loam

Usually used in remote areas or on existing loam courts. Cheapest base option. 5mm minus Crusher Dust, compacted and laser level directly onto prepared site with suitable sub-grade material or compacted road base or existing clay base. A timber or concrete edge beam will be needed for the perimeter of the court.

Granulated Slag Blend

Most popular base. Drains well, is easy on the feet and repairs are simple. 150mm of compacted and laser levelled slag granulate with a reinforced concrete edge beam. A site inspection would be necessary to determine if suitable, eg; access, water etc.

Hotmix

Easy on the feet, cheaper than concrete. KCL VIC SPORTS generally install 150mm of compacted and levelled road base with 25mm of AC5 Hotmix laid on top.

Concrete

This is the most stable base for any surface as it is unaffected by tree roots and minor settling. We generally install a 100mm thick with base F.72 mesh.

Grass Types

The main variations in grass type are pile height, denier and colour.

Pile Height

Varies from 10 – 25mm depending on denier and application. The most common height is 19mm.

Denier

This is the density or thickness of the yarn. The higher the rating, the denser the material and usually the denser material is shorter pile. There are two densities commonly used – 10,000 and 7,600 denier.

Colour

Naturally, the most common colour is green but red and blue are also used to great effect. Lines are tufted into the roll in either white or yellow.

Acrylic Hard Court

The Acrylic system includes permanently painted lines and can be applied to either the concrete or bitumen base with a surface life expectancy of 5 – 7 years.

Hotmix / Asphalt

This is the most popular base for Acrylic surfaces due to it being relatively soft under foot compared to concrete. It is also cheaper than concrete to install.

Concrete

This is the most stable base for Acrylic surfaces as it is unaffected by tree roots and minor settling. Concrete bases are generally hard on the legs but his can be overcome by using a cushion coat system which softens the foot fall.

Fencing

There are three (3) recommended fence to fence sizes for tennis courts:

  • International 36 x 18 metres

  • Intermediate (average) 33.0 x 16.5 metres

  • Minimum 30 x 15 metres

The Playing Area is 24.0 x 11.0 metres, and where the location allows, if possible the orientation should run North-South. The fence construction is an important aspect of the court and we recommend the following:

  • 80NB galvanised corner posts (chamfered).

  • 40NB galvanised intermediate posts.

  • 32 NB galvanised top rail.

  • 3.0 metre PVC covered chain mesh (black or green).

  • 3 PVC covered twisted straining wires to suit mesh.

  • Access gates as required.

  • Fence posts shaped to low level if required.

  • All posts and rails powder coated to suit mesh.

  • Lighting standards installed in fence line to suit preferred lighting system

Lighting

Lighting systems for a tennis court can vary from the installation of 8 x 500 watt lamps to the use of 4 x 1000 watt Environ low level lamps.
